Location: Aurora Sea school, Sea end house, Burnham on Crouch, Essex, CM0 8AN Information: Take your boating experience to the next level with Aurora Sea School RYA SRC Radio Course. This course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to operate a VHF radio in a maritime environment, including emergency situations. With hands-on training and expert instruction, you’ll gain confidence in your ability to communicate effectively and safely while on the water. Sign up now and enhance your boating skills. Previous Knowledge/Experience: Not essential, but some prior reading recommended if you have time. Age: You must be over the age of 16 years old to attend this course. What’s included? You will receive your G31 RYA VHF Handbook before the course. Tea, coffee, water and squash is available but lunch is not included. The price of the exam (£76) is included in the cost of the course. You can pay this directly to the RYA if you prefer let us know in advance so we can send you the link. What will I need to bring? 1. Notebook and pen 2. A passport size photo for your certificate 3. RYA VHF Handbook (you will get this in advance) 4. You must learn the Phonetic Alphabet before arriving, we do not have time to teach this on the course. Course Structures: This is a one day course that is taught in the classroom using training VHF radio simulators. Most of the day will be learning the background of how radios work and fit in with the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) (Don’t panic, we will be going through all of these different phrases!). We will also be looking at other safety aids. At the end of the afternoon tea break you will be ready to sit your assessment. There is a written exam which is multiple choice then you will do a practical test which simply involves you demonstrating that you can use the radio. This course introduces the following necessary skills: • The basics of radio operation • The correct frequencies (channels) to be used • Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures • Making ship to shore communication • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) • Search and Rescue (SART) Yours sincerely, Dawn Smith BEM
